History of the Tomato on Homegrown dropouts as told by former Schwinn employee Rich Adams:
Funny story about the tomato on the dropout. During the designing, I suggested it, and the idea was poo-pooed... and I felt really passionately that it had to be there so I added it at the last minute... roughly sketching a spline in the CAD model that seemed pretty close to the decal artwork.. if you look closely you'll see that it's not really exact. I sent the final files off to the factory for tooling with the tomato secretly added. Everyone was stoked when the samples came back in, but it illustrates how loose the design and development was during that time. People often think of it as a super regimented and disciplined product process with all these checks and balances but it was really much more loose than that... we all just knew the right thing to do, and rode together every weekend... dreaming up cool stuff, and coming in on Monday and making it happen. they gave us so much leash to hang ourselves it was scary...
